The U.S. Postal Service is hosting a series of job fairs across Alabama this month to fill rural mail carrier positions. Both assistant rural carrier and rural carrier associate roles pay $21.89 an hour and come with federal benefits, career advancement, and retirement opportunities.

The work is largely outdoors with minimal supervision, though applicants should note they may need to use a personal vehicle on occasion. Events are scheduled at post offices in dozens of communities including Huntsville, Madison, Athens, and Decatur ... running through late August, with additional fairs planned for September.

Dangerous Heat Sticks Around North Alabama

The Alabama Department of Public Health is warning residents about heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke as extreme heat and humidity continue. Madison is forecast to reach about 97–98°F through much of the first half of the week, with thunderstorms becoming more likely later. People working outdoors, athletes, older adults and anyone doing yard work should take extra breaks, drink water regularly and know that confusion, fainting or very high body temperature can signal a medical emergency.

Calhoun Community College is advertising a free, two-week Class B CDL training program through Alabama's Skills for Success initiative. The college also notes that other CDL funding may be available through the Alabama Career Center, and qualified women may have access to additional free-training opportunities. For Madison-area job seekers considering transportation, public works, utilities or other commercial-driving careers, this is a practical local training option worth checking now. [Read More]

The Perseids Aren't Finished Yet

The Perseid meteor shower peaked earlier this week, but the American Meteor Society says it remains active through August 29. For the night of August 15–16, northern observers at dark sites may still see roughly five Perseids per hour, with additional sporadic meteors possible. The best viewing is during the last few dark hours before dawn, looking generally toward the northeastern sky but allowing your eyes to scan widely. Madison's suburban lighting will reduce the count, so darker locations outside the city will provide a better show. [Read More]

Nitro Tales

Nitro Tales is not a full dinner place. It is a place for sipping and chatting.

The Providence spot is part coffee bar, part cocktail bar and part small-bites hangout. Think fancy little drinks, mocktails, cocktails on tap, coffee creations, croffles and snacky plates. It is a little bouji in a fun way, so go in with the right expectation.

You are probably not leaving stuffed. This is where you meet a friend, order something pretty, talk for a while and maybe share a bite or two. If you are starving, eat before or plan dinner after. If you want a slower stop where the drink is the point, this makes sense.

First time... try one of the cocktails or zero-proof drinks on tap. Add a croffle or savory waffle if you want something with it. Nitro Tales works well for a girls' night starter, a casual date, an after-work drink or a "let's catch up" stop.

Did You Know Planes Can Dump Fuel Before an Emergency Landing?

If a plane takes off and needs to return quickly, one issue the crew may face is weight. A plane can be much heavier at takeoff than it is supposed to be for landing, especially if it just departed with enough fuel for a long flight.

Some larger aircraft have systems that allow pilots to release fuel in the air so the plane can get down to a safer landing weight. Air traffic control helps coordinate where and when that happens, and the fuel is usually released high enough that much of it breaks into tiny droplets, evaporates or disperses before reaching the ground.

That does not mean every emergency return involves fuel dumping. Many smaller passenger jets do not have fuel dump systems. In those cases, pilots may circle to burn fuel if the situation allows, or they may land overweight if getting on the ground right away is the safer choice.

For people living near Huntsville International Airport, the main thing to know is that fuel dumping is not a normal part of takeoff or landing. It is an emergency tool, and pilots use it only when the situation calls for it.

If you are running your 3D printer, laser engraver, welder or tool that makes stinky smells... We hope you are opening your windows and venting all those chemicals to the outside of your home.

If you don't have a vent, open your windows or your garage door, maybe you should start monitoring your air. This device will alert you if the air around you is not so great when you are using your tools.

Not trying to make y'all scared, just making you a little more aware. If you learn from Youtube, you might not get that safety briefing. 🤷‍♀️
