The program is also actively recruiting male mentors from the community. All prospective mentors must pass a background check to ensure participant safety.

Alabama’s back-to-school sales tax holiday is July 17–19

Alabama’s annual tax-free weekend begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 17, and runs through Sunday, July 19. Qualifying purchases include many school supplies, computers, books and clothing. Energy-efficiency assistance is available through Alabama partners

The program helps qualifying low-income households make safety and energy-efficiency improvements that can reduce utility costs. Madison County residents struggling with cooling bills should check their local community-action provider for eligibility and application details. [Read More]

Military debt-forgiveness pitches may be scams

The FTC is warning service members and military families about callers offering special “military debt forgiveness” or debt-relief programs. This is particularly relevant around Redstone Arsenal and Madison’s defense community. Do not give an unexpected caller account information or pay an upfront fee; contact the lender directly using a trusted phone number. [Read More]

Here’s a look at the 7-day weather forecast for Madison, AL:

My wife left me because of my obsession with pasta. I'm feeling cannelloni right now.

Why Is Water Pouring Out of That Pipe?

Q: Why is water dripping from a pipe outside my house?
During summer, that water is often A/C condensate. Your air conditioner removes moisture from humid indoor air as it cools the house. That moisture collects near the indoor evaporator coil and drains outside through a condensate drain line.

Q: Is dripping water from the A/C drain line normal?
Yes, if it is coming from the normal primary condensate drain line. On hot humid days, a steady drip can mean the system is pulling moisture out of the air and sending it where it belongs.

Q: When should I be concerned?
Pay attention if water starts coming from a second pipe, a pipe above a window or door or any place you do not normally see water. That may be the secondary drain line, also called an emergency overflow drain. It can mean the primary condensate drain is clogged or the drain pan is filling.

Q: What causes a condensate drain line to clog?
Dust, dirt, algae and debris can build up inside the line. Once the line slows down, water can back up into the drain pan. Standing water in the pan or overflow from the pan is a good reason to shut the system down and call for service.

Q: Can a dirty air filter cause A/C water problems?
Yes. A dirty filter can reduce airflow and contribute to frozen evaporator coils. When the ice melts, water may show up where it should not. Bryant lists dirty filters and frozen evaporator coils among common causes of A/C water leaks.

Q: What should homeowners do first?
Replace a dirty filter, look for water around the indoor unit and check which outside pipe is dripping. If water is leaking indoors, the secondary drain is running or you see a ceiling stain near the air handler, turn the system off and call an HVAC company.

North Alabama humidity makes A/C systems work hard. A little water from the primary condensate drain can be normal. Water from the emergency drain, water inside the house or a wet ceiling spot needs attention before it turns into drywall damage.

MELT Madison

MELT has opened at Clift Farm and this one should be an easy choice for families, lunch meetups and anyone who still believes a grilled cheese can fix a rough day. The Alabama-born restaurant started in 2011 and built its name around classic comfort food with a modern twist, especially grilled cheese sandwiches, burgers and hearty sides.

The Madison location gives Clift Farm another casual sit-down option with curbside, carryout and dine-in service. This new spot opened in early May and has both indoor seating and a patio, which should make it a good pick when you want something relaxed but not another drive-thru night.

Start with cheese. That is the point. MELT's own site calls out the classic grilled cheese, the burger with Matilda sauce and the spicy Buffalo Chicken sandwich as some options in the long list. They also have vegan cheese, fresh vegetables and gluten-free bread, so mixed groups have more room to work with than the name might suggest.

This is a good first-weekend stop if you want something familiar with enough menu range to keep everyone interested. Bring the kids after errands, meet a friend for lunch or grab carryout when dinner needs to be low-stress and still feel like a treat.

Sitting on skates

Do you have a chair that has wheels but feels feels like they don't roll? I happen to find pet fur and dirt clogged up all inside there. Don't judge! However, I replaced them with these wheels and my chair has turned into a Tesla. It's quiet and easy to maneuver. It also might add an extra inch.

Wheels are pretty standard desk chairs and you will be able to replace them by prying them off with a flat head screw driver.

Now my kids want them... sigh... I know they'll be pushing each other up and down the hallways.
