Madison, Alabama is getting a landmark of its own.

The city and Madison Visionary Partners have unveiled approved plans for a large outdoor sculpture spelling "MADISON" near Toyota Field, where visitors can snap photos standing in place of the letter "I."

Designed and installed by Hendrix Design, the fiberglass and steel structure will stand 6.5 feet tall and stretch 30 feet wide, visible from Interstate 565.

Multistate Cyclospora Outbreak Linked to Shredded Lettuce

Federal health officials are investigating more than 1,600 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis, with additional cases still under review. The outbreak has been linked to shredded iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico, and the supplier has begun removing affected lettuce. Symptoms can include prolonged watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea and fatigue. Madison residents who become sick after eating bagged salads or restaurant salads should contact a health care provider and mention possible food exposure.

Why Are There Dead Bugs in My Light Fixtures?

Q: Why do bugs end up inside porch lights and ceiling fixtures?
Many flying insects are drawn to artificial light at night. Once they get near a porch light, garage light or ceiling fixture, they can slip through small gaps around the cover. Some get trapped and die inside the fixture.

Q: Does switching to LED help?
It can, especially if you choose a warm LED, yellow LED or amber LED. The bulb type matters, but the color of the light matters too. A cool-white or bluish LED can still bring bugs to the porch. A warmer bulb gives off less of the short-wavelength light that many insects respond to.

Q: What light temperature should I look for?
For outdoor lights, look for bulbs around 2,000K to 2,700K. Lower numbers look warmer, more yellow or amber. Higher numbers like 4,000K to 5,000K look cooler and whiter, which can be more attractive to insects. Yellow and amber LEDs are often better choices for porch lights, patio lights and garage lights.

Q: Are incandescent bulbs worse than LEDs?
Incandescent bulbs can attract insects because they give off broad-spectrum light and heat. LEDs usually run cooler and use less energy, but the best choice for fewer bugs is a warm-colored LED, not a bright blue-white one. A study comparing domestic lights tested LED, compact fluorescent and filament bulbs and found that attraction depends on light type and color temperature.

Q: How can I keep light fixtures cleaner?
Use warm yellow or amber outdoor bulbs, lower the brightness when you can and put porch lights on timers or motion sensors. Check the fixture cover too. If bugs can crawl through gaps, a better-sealed outdoor-rated fixture may stay cleaner longer.

Three Scoops, Madison

National Ice Cream Day gives us a perfect excuse to point folks toward Three Scoops on Highway 72. This is a local ice cream shop with hand-dipped ice cream, shakes, frozen yogurt, sundaes, fruit smoothies, coffee and other dessert options, so it works whether you want a cone after lunch or a full treat stop with the kids.

Reviews mention helpful staff and a solid flavor selection. One common thread is that people like the taste and variety, especially for a single cone, cup or shake. Reviewers have mentioned flavors like sherbet, caramel pecan, strawberry and chocolate and one listing notes fun options like Mexican Hot Chocolate, Sunken Treasure and Cherries N Cream.

Keep it simple... get a scoop in a cup or cone and let the kids pick something from the toppings or shake side if they are in celebration mode. If there is a line today, take it as a sign that everyone opened their email today.

I Could Literally Shake My Door and Make Music

I dunno what the summer has done to me but I'm finding myself working on the honey-do list like a maniac. At least the other half is happy.

This week's fix had to do with the door to my garage.

There was about 1/4" play on the door. That's right I could shake my door back and forth and it was because I couldn't easily adjust the strike plate. The keyword was easily. And Lowes and Home Depot didn't have a solution.

So after I found and installed this new strike plate, there is no longer play on the door.

So I thought I'd share this for all you other honey-do list doers.

All you'd need is a Phillips and Flathead screwdriver.
