Trivia Question❓

Madison, Alabama is a city that straddles two counties... one is Madison County, but which is the other county it also extends into?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

This Weeks Newsletter Presented By...

Matthew Riggle, a math instructor at Calhoun Community College in North Alabama, recently took his love of learning from the classroom to the Jeopardy! stage and won.

Riggle credits a lifelong curiosity, nurtured by his parents and sparked by watching Ken Jennings compete on the show back in 2004, as the driving force behind his appearance.

Getting on air was no easy feat, requiring multiple tests and a mock-game audition before producers made their pick. Riggle says the real experience was just as fast-paced as it looks on television and every bit as surreal.

What did the triangle say to the circle?

You’re pointless.

Do you want a Coke?

Q: Why do some Southerners call every soft drink a Coke?
Around Alabama and much of the South, "Coke" became a catch-all word for soft drinks. Coca-Cola started in Atlanta and became so common in Southern stores, restaurants and homes that the brand name turned into everyday shorthand.

Q: Does Coke always mean Coca-Cola?
Not always. In casual conversation, someone might ask if you want a Coke and then ask what kind. That "kind" could be Sprite, Dr Pepper, Pepsi or another soft drink.

Q: Is this a Southern thing?
Mostly, yes. Other parts of the country may say "soda" or "pop." In the South, "Coke" is often the word people grew up hearing at cookouts, ball fields and family dinners.

Biscuit Belly, Huntsville

Biscuit Belly is for the morning when a plain biscuit is not going to cut it.

The menu is built around big biscuit sandwiches, gravy-covered plates and breakfast items that feel more like a weekend reward than a weekday routine. The Rockwell is the obvious first look... fried chicken, cheddar and sausage gravy on a biscuit. If you want to go a step up, the Rockwell Supreme adds bacon and an egg.

That isn't a light breakfast. That's a “skip lunch or take a nap” breakfast.

They also have Bonuts, which are biscuit donut holes tossed in cinnamon sugar. That alone makes it an easy sell if you are bringing kids or meeting someone who wants coffee and something sweet before the day starts.

The menu is not all gravy and fried chicken. You can still find avocado toast, yogurt, fruit, salads and coffee drinks. But let’s be honest, most people are walking in because they saw a biscuit stacked high and decided breakfast needed to be fun.

Busy times can slow things down, so this is not the place to squeeze in when you are already late. Go when you have a little room in the morning, order something you would not make at home and enjoy it.

County Road Numbers

County road numbers are assigned by the county government responsible for maintaining the road. Unlike interstate and U.S. highway numbers, county road numbers do not follow one nationwide system. Each county can create its own numbering method based on its road inventory and local record-keeping needs.

A road may receive a number when the county accepts responsibility for maintaining it. The number helps road crews, engineers and emergency officials identify the correct stretch of pavement, even when residents know the road by a local name. Alabama Department of Transportation maps list these county road numbers alongside state and federal highway designations.

The numbers may appear random because they do not always indicate the road's direction, age or location. They often reflect the order in which roads entered the county system or how the county organized its records. A county may also renumber a road as routes change, roads connect or addressing systems improve.

Hands free...

How do you prop up your phone in your car?

My other half uses these things called pop sockets on her phone and has a vent clip to hold her phone up.

I had a different vent clip that was more of a clamp style that I often had to fiddle with and sometimes it fell off.

Finally decided to try something new... and this has been quite the game changer. Strong suction on my windshield and a strong magnet. With this, I now believe I qualify to work for Uber and Lyft.
