SkyLume has been popping up in the news and in social media because it is hard to miss. It is tall, it is modern and it changes the feel of the space around it once the light hits.

Here is the quick story behind it.

SkyLume was designed by artist Adam Buente of Project One Studio in Indianapolis.

Is a 60 foot public art sculpture made with painted steel and aluminum. It includes kinetic elements and programmable lighting so it shifts from day to night.

SkyLume is installed at John Hunt Park and it is placed as a year round landmark for visitors. Arts Huntsville also notes it is on view to the public year round.

City leaders unveiled SkyLume in mid May 2026 as the largest addition to Huntsville’s public art collection.

SkyLume is meant to represent gravitational pull, community connection and forward momentum. The city description talks about a central ribbon that symbolizes an unseen force drawing people in and an encircling ribbon reflecting energy and movement.

Arts Huntsville frames it as a defining landmark that gives John Hunt Park a stronger sense of place and offers a subtle nod to Huntsville’s legacy of propulsion and lift without being literal about it.

SkyLume is described as the largest public art commission Arts Huntsville has managed for the City of Huntsville to date.

John Hunt Park already draws crowds for sports and events. SkyLume gives people a shared “you know where” reference point. It also makes the park feel more like a destination even on normal days.

Have you seen SkyLume in person yet, daytime or night? Which one hit harder for you and where did you park when you went?
