If you have ever wondered how “staffing shortages” translate to real places like Huntsville, the FAA actually publishes facility level staffing snapshots. And Huntsville is on the list.
Huntsville Tower has a staffing target and a current count
In the FAA’s facility staffing report (April 23, 2025), HSV Huntsville Tower shows...
CPC target: 17
Current CPC on board: 15
ATCs in training: 5
CPC means Certified Professional Controller. These are the fully certified controllers counted toward the facility target.
Why the FAA launched a gamer focused campaign
This hiring push was not the FTC or the FCC. It was the FAA under the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The logic was simple and kind of smart... many controllers are gamers and the job rewards the same core skills like rapid scanning, multitasking, spatial awareness and calm decision making under pressure.
So the FAA aimed the message at gamers on purpose as a way to widen the funnel quickly.
The results were almost immediate
According to reporting on the launch, the FAA received 8,004 applications in 13 hours and officials said 7,252 met basic qualifications.
What this means for Huntsville and everyone else
A record number of applications does not instantly create new controllers at Huntsville Tower. Applicants still have to clear testing, medical and background steps, then complete training before they become CPCs.
But it does matter because it refills the pipeline and the pipeline is what eventually fills the target numbers at facilities like HSV.
The campaign got people to apply. The longer win is how many make it through training and certification and stick with it.
