Madison, Alabama is rolling out an ambitious capital plan that touches everything from public safety to city streets. At the top of the wish list... 20 new police cars over the next several years.

Police Chief Johnny Gandy says the current fleet is being run around the clock, racking up miles and maintenance bills that now exceed the vehicles' value. The new cars are meant to keep officers safer and cut repair costs.

The plan also covers road expansions and repaving of major thoroughfares throughout the city. Nothing is final yet... the proposals still require a city council vote before moving forward.

Alabama Health Officials Encourage Seasonal Vaccine Conversations

The Alabama Department of Public Health joined state medical and hospital organizations on October 14 to encourage residents to discuss seasonal vaccinations with healthcare providers.

As fall respiratory illness season develops, Madison families, older adults and people with underlying medical conditions may benefit from reviewing their vaccination plans. Residents can ask their doctors or pharmacists about flu, COVID-19, RSV and other vaccines based on personal circumstances and current recommendations. [Read More]

Alabama Voters Can Review November 3 Sample Ballots Now

The Alabama Secretary of State has made sample ballots available ahead of the November 3, 2026, general election. Voters will decide statewide and local races as well as four proposed amendments to Alabama's Constitution.

For Madison-area residents, reviewing the ballot in advance is especially useful because constitutional amendments can involve complicated wording. Voters should check the sample ballot for their county, particularly because portions of Madison extend into Limestone County.

The Secretary of State also provides plain-language statements about the amendments, helping residents understand what a yes or no vote would change. [Read More]

Orionid Meteor Shower Peaks October 21–22 Over North Alabama

One of October's best-known meteor showers reaches its peak overnight October 21 - 22, offering Madison residents an opportunity to watch debris from Halley's Comet enter Earth's atmosphere.

NASA estimates the Orionids can produce roughly 10 - 20 meteors per hour under favorable dark skies. A bright waxing Moon will interfere with viewing this year, so actual counts may be lower.

Best date: Late Wednesday, October 21, into early Thursday, October 22

Best time: A few hours before sunrise, after the Moon sets

Where to look: Generally toward the southern and southeastern sky, but meteors can appear anywhere overhead

Equipment: No telescope required

For Madison families, this can be an enjoyable early-morning activity if skies are clear. Rural areas outside Huntsville and Madison's brighter neighborhoods will generally provide better viewing. Allow at least 20–30 minutes for your eyes to adjust to darkness.

La Colonial

La Colonial on Jordan Lane is part Mexican grocery store and part taqueria. You can sit down for tacos, birria or a torta then walk a few steps and shop for fresh meat, produce, pastries and other Mexican groceries before you leave. It is one of those places where the restaurant and market feed into each other, so the food feels closely tied to what is being sold in the store.

Birria is one of the strongest reasons to go. The birria quesa tacos get mentioned over and over, with tender beef, melted cheese and consomme for dipping. They also offer a ramen and taco combo.

The pambazo is another one to look for. It is a large Mexican sandwich with chorizo and potato inside bread that is dipped in guajillo chile sauce then griddled. Tacos al pastor also get a lot of love, and if you still have room after the meal, the in-store bakery has tres leches, pastries, cakes and cookies.

If it's your first time get some birria tacos, add one al pastor taco if you want to compare and then walk through the bakery before heading out. If you are hungry enough for something different, take a pambazo for the road.

Head toward the food counter, order what sounds good and give yourself a little time. Some customers mention longer waits when it is busy and popular items can sell out.

Prices are generally around $10 to $20 per person, though bigger birria orders or multiple dishes can push that higher. There is a private parking lot and takeout and delivery are available.

Ooh Stickers!

I've always wanted the ability for my kids to make stickers... ok me too... but I couldn't get it made the way I wanted. A vinyl machine was one or two colors... you could create them with a normal printer but it just never came out right... now they have UV printers which are crazy expensive... But I found this to be just what I needed.

You can create simple stickers to put on your Yeti cups, laptops, label toys, etc. And you can even have chatGPT create you images. I kinda like doing the iPhone cut out and using those as stickers.
