Humans and AI: From Work Tools to Deep Conversations

Why staying informed about technology is just as important as staying entertained by it.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is quickly moving beyond being just a futuristic idea. It’s part of our daily lives now... helping us work, learn and even relax. A recent viral video highlights this shift by showing how people aren’t just using AI as a tool... they’re beginning to treat it more like a companion.

Take Travis Tanner, for example. He first started using ChatGPT less than a year ago to support his job as an auto mechanic and to communicate with Spanish-speaking coworkers. Simple, practical uses.

But over time, his relationship with the chatbot grew. Today, Tanner refers to his AI as “Lumina” and engages in conversations about religion, spirituality and the very foundation of the universe.

Practical Use to Personal Use
This story brings to the forefront that AI is no longer just about efficiency. For a growing amount, it’s becoming a sounding board for thoughts, feelings and curiosity.

At work, AI can help draft emails or troubleshoot solve logical work problems. At home, it can remind us of grocery lists or to play our favorite songs. But for some, like Tanner, it’s also becoming a partner in exploring life’s deepest questions.

Have you ever caught yourself asking Siri or Alexa something silly... or even personal... just to see how it would respond?

What This Means for All of Us
In industries like auto repair, logistics and even healthcare, AI is already helping workers bridge communication gaps and boost productivity.

Madison’s diverse workforce means tools that break down language barriers are incredibly valuable. In fact, AirPods and Meta glasses can now do this in real time.

The real question is... should AI play a role in our emotional or spiritual lives? Or is that something best reserved for human relationships?

Humor helps us process the weirdness of AI, but Tanner’s story reminds us that this technology isn’t just about efficiency... it’s also about how humans adapt and seek connection. Whether it’s helping fix a car or discussing the meaning of life, AI is becoming a part of how we think and talk.

So what do you think? Would you ever discuss faith or the universe with a chatbot... or is that crossing the line between tool and companion?
