Keep It Clear: Proper Leaf Disposal Helps Madison Prevent Flooding and Protect Waterways

As fall arrives, Madison residents are reminded that simple habits... like bagging leaves and keeping drains clear... can protect homes, roads and the Tennessee River watershed.

As autumn colors sweep across Madison, residents are reminded of the importance of proper leaf disposal to prevent clogged storm drains and protect local waterways.

When leaves pile up along curbs and gutters, they can block storm drains, leading to street flooding and costly damage to roads and sidewalks. Many neighborhood drainage issues come down to one simple cause... blocked storm inlets. Keeping them clear is essential for community safety and infrastructure upkeep.

Decomposing leaves also release nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, which can feed harmful algal blooms in nearby streams and lakes. By keeping leaves out of storm drains, residents help protect the local ecosystem and maintain cleaner waterways.

City ordinances require homeowners to keep curbs, gutters and storm drains free of debris. Residents can bag leaves and place them curbside for collection to prevent problems before they start.

Leaf Disposal Tips for Residents
âś… Bag it... Use paper or biodegradable leaf bags (32 gallons or less, 50 pounds or less). Don't forget to place them curbside by 7 a.m. on collection day.

âś… Mow or mulch... Shredded leaves make great fertilizer and are less likely to clog drains.

✅ Stay away from the curb... Never blow or rake leaves into the street... it’s illegal and can cause flooding.

âś… Adopt your drain... After storms, check nearby storm drains and remove leaves or trash to keep water flowing.

Storm Drainage & Street Sweeping
Public Works routinely clean storm drains and pipes to prevent buildup. Our fellow residents have a responsibility to help keep drains and ditches clear of leaves and clippings. We also have a wtreet sweeping program to remove debris and contaminants from gutters and streets.

Yard Waste Collection
Madison contracts with Republic Services for yard debris and bulk pickup. Just place waste curbside without blocking water flow or traffic. Leaves, grass, branches and small limbs are all accepted.
