Did You Know You May Be Able to Use HSA or FSA Funds for a Litter-Robot? |
Some cat owners may qualify if scooping the litter box creates a medical or physical barrier. |

A Litter-Robot sounds like a pet convenience product at first. It automatically separates waste from clean litter so cat owners do not have to scoop the box after every use. For some people, that is a nice upgrade. For others, it may solve a real health or mobility problem.
Whisker, the company behind Litter-Robot, now has an HSA/FSA eligibility process for select automatic litter boxes and pet care products. The key phrase is “Letter of Medical Necessity.” In plain English, that means a licensed medical provider needs to determine that the product is medically necessary for your situation.
This is not the same as saying every cat owner can use HSA or FSA money for a Litter-Robot. Regular pet expenses are usually personal expenses. The HSA/FSA angle applies when there is a qualifying medical reason, such as trouble bending, chronic back pain, arthritis, pregnancy-related concerns, asthma, allergies, immune issues or another condition that makes litter box maintenance harder, unsafe or medically relevant.
Whisker’s current HSA/FSA page lists several possible qualifying conditions and says customers can choose the HSA/FSA payment option at checkout through Flex. From there, the customer completes a telehealth consultation. A licensed provider reviews the request and may issue a Letter of Medical Necessity if the situation qualifies.
That letter matters. Your HSA or FSA administrator may ask for proof that the purchase was a qualified medical expense. Keep the Letter of Medical Necessity, receipt, order confirmation and any reimbursement paperwork in one place in case your plan asks for it later.
How the Process Works Start by checking Whisker’s HSA/FSA eligibility page and eligible product store. Look for the HSA/FSA badge on the product page before adding anything to your cart.
At checkout, choose the HSA/FSA payment option if it is available. Whisker’s current page says the process goes through Flex and includes a brief telehealth consultation. If approved, a Letter of Medical Necessity is issued.
If your HSA or FSA card works at checkout, you may be able to pay directly. If not, you may need to pay with a regular card and submit the receipt and Letter of Medical Necessity to your HSA or FSA administrator for reimbursement.
Before spending the money, check your own plan rules. HSA and FSA administrators can have documentation requirements, and not every plan handles reimbursement the same way.

A Few Things to Remember This is not tax advice, medical advice or a guarantee that your purchase will qualify. Your own medical situation, Letter of Medical Necessity and HSA/FSA administrator matter.
Do not buy it only because you heard “Litter-Robot is HSA eligible.”
Check the current product page, complete the eligibility process and save your paperwork.
For the right person, this could make cat care easier and reduce a real barrier. For everyone else, it may still be a great pet product, but it may not be a qualified medical expense. |
