Fourth of July travel enforcement starts statewide

ALEA says troopers and special agents will be highly visible on Alabama roads and waterways during the Independence Day travel period. For Madison families headed to Lake Guntersville, Smith Lake, the Gulf Coast or local fireworks events, this is a reminder to plan sober rides, expect heavier enforcement and allow extra time on I-565, U.S. 72 and Memorial Parkway. The Alabama Department of Public Health posted holiday safety guidance covering heat illness, parked cars, food handling and fireworks. Summer weather outlook points to heat and scattered storms

Alabama EMA’s summer outlook says Alabama should expect above-normal temperatures and normal rainfall from June through August, with tropical systems still worth watching even inland. For Madison homeowners and commuters, this means staying ready for heat, pop-up storms, power interruptions and heavy rain events even though the city is far from the coast. [Read More]

Why Are Fireworks Different Colors?

Q: Why do fireworks light up in different colors?
Fireworks get their colors from different chemical compounds. When they burn, they give off colored light. Strontium can create red, copper can create blue, sodium can create yellow and barium can create green.

Q: Why is blue one of the harder fireworks colors to make?
Blue is tricky because the compounds that create it can break down at very high temperatures. Fireworks need heat to burst and shine, but too much heat can wash out that blue color.

Q: Why do some fireworks sparkle, crackle or leave glittery trails?
Fireworks makers add materials that burn in different ways. Some create bright sparks, some make crackling sounds and some leave glowing trails as the pieces fall through the air.

The next time you watch fireworks, look for the colors first. Red, green, gold and white are common, but a clear blue firework is one of the harder tricks in the sky.

Big Spring Cafe

Big Spring Cafe has been feeding Huntsville since 1922 and calls itself the city's oldest operating cafe. That alone makes it worth a stop, but the real draw is the food people keep coming back for: the "greasy burger," breakfast plates, hot dogs, no-bean chili, slaw dogs, Brunswick stew and fried bologna biscuits.

This is a breakfast and lunch place with history in the walls, not a polished chain experience. The current location on Governors Drive sits between a meat market and a bait shop, which tells you plenty about the pace. It is practical, local and built around regulars who already know their order.

Huntsville has changed a lot since 1922, but there is still room for a small counter-service cafe where breakfast starts early, lunch is affordable and the order does not need a long explanation.

Did You Know? Madison County Has a Revolutionary War Connection

When we think about the Declaration of Independence, most of us picture Philadelphia in 1776. Huntsville and Madison did not exist yet, but North Alabama still has a real connection to that era. After the Revolutionary War, many veterans and patriot families moved south and west as the young country opened new land for settlement.

Madison County became one of those landing places. Local historians and preservation groups have documented more than 100 Revolutionary Patriots who settled in Madison County or were buried here. Some served as soldiers. Others supported the war effort with supplies or public service. Their stories are part of the reason you can still find Revolutionary War markers and memorials in the Huntsville area today.

There is also the name Madison itself. Madison County was created in 1808 and named for James Madison, who later became the fourth president. Madison did not sign the Declaration of Independence, but he played a major role in shaping the country that came after it, especially through the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

So while the Declaration was signed hundreds of miles away, the people and ideas behind American independence eventually made their way to our own backyard. A good place to learn more is the Revolutionary Patriots of Madison County project, which is helping identify and share the stories of local patriots tied to America’s founding.

Filters for Showers?

Well let me tell you what I found when I removed my shower head to install this filter... I found pebbles. WTH! No joke. How in the world did pebbles get all the way there.

This filter claims to improve skin and hair health, protect color-treated hair, remove odors and still maintain water pressure. Maybe I'll be glowing next week and people will be telling me at how healthy my hair looks. 🥰
