New Alabama guidance matters for companies with out-of-state and hybrid workers
Alabama issued updated guidance August 25 explaining when employers must withhold Alabama income tax from nonresident employees. In general, wages are subject to Alabama withholding when the employee is physically performing services in Alabama, while certain workers who spend 30 days or fewer working in the state may qualify for a statutory safe harbor. That is particularly relevant around Madison and Huntsville, where defense, aerospace, engineering and technology employers often have employees working across state lines or on hybrid schedules. Some late tax filers can still file federally for free
The IRS issued a reminder August 26 that people who requested an extension for their 2025 federal return don't have to wait until the October 15 deadline. IRS Free File remains available through October 15 for taxpayers with 2025 adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less. The important catch: an extension gave people more time to file, not more time to pay taxes originally due. For Madison households still sitting on an unfinished return, this is a genuinely useful reminder. [Read More]

Viva Tequila Mexican Cocina |
Viva Tequila Mexican Cocina is now open on County Line Road in Madison, in the Publix shopping center at 12090 County Line Rd, Suite H. It adds another sit-down Mexican option on the west side of Madison, especially for families and folks who want dinner close to home without heading toward University Drive or downtown Huntsville. The online ordering page lists pickup and delivery plus a full food menu, lunch and brunch items and a la carte options.
The menu has the familiar plates people expect, but it also gives you room to order beyond the basic combo. Appetizers include choriqueso, street corn, queso, guacamole and a trio dip. Tacos include street tacos served with charro beans, rice, cilantro, onion and lime. The specials section lists carnitas, flautas Mexicanas, a Mexican bowl, fish tacos and shrimp tacos.
The birria section is probably where a lot of first-time attention will go. Viva Tequila lists birria tostadas, birria ramen, a birria Philly cheese wrap and a pizza quesabirria with consome for dipping. If you are going with a group, the parrillada Mexicana is built for sharing with grilled chicken, steak, carnitas, shrimp, chorizo, vegetables, rice, beans, tortillas and the usual fajita setup.
Expect a menu with plenty of choices, including seafood, fajitas, enchiladas, kids plates, aguas frescas and Jarritos. If its your first time, I would start with the street corn or choriqueso, then pick either street tacos, enchiladas verdes or one of the birria plates. If you are bringing kids, the menu is easy to work with since it includes tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas, burritos and chicken nuggets.

Sirens for The Hearing Impaired |
This one hits home and I don't know if many of you know of someone who has hearing loss but please lean in on this one.
I was recently informed that a loved one wasn't able to hear a fire alarm at their work place. Now, if you are hearing impaired, how would you know you need to exit the building... perhaps with warning lights or strobes. And you would think that with RTO (return to work), the agencies would at least equip offices with the appropriate safety devices.
Well I've never paid any attention to see if these were sold because I didn't think I needed it. But when you find out that someone you care about could be affected should something happen in their home, then the only recourse is to get them one.
