Madison County, Alabama is taking a major step toward opening its first-ever county-operated animal shelter. County commissioners approved an agreement with architectural firm Studio 2H Design LLC to guide site selection and design for the new facility.

Currently, animals picked up by county animal control officers are sent to Huntsville Animal Services, but rising population and overcrowded shelters have made a dedicated county facility a pressing need.

Medicare Open Enrollment Gives Alabama Seniors a Chance to Review 2027 Costs

Medicare's annual open enrollment period is underway and continues through December 7. This is the opportunity for eligible residents to compare Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plans and make changes that take effect January 1, 2027.

Madison-area retirees should compare more than monthly premiums. Prescription coverage, preferred doctors, hospital networks, deductibles and out-of-pocket costs can change from one year to the next. Alabama's State Health Insurance Assistance Program offers counseling to help residents understand their choices. Families helping older relatives manage healthcare expenses may also benefit from reviewing plan information before the deadline. [Read More]

FTC Offers New Guidance for People Considering Franchise Businesses

The Federal Trade Commission published an October 19 consumer advisory explaining what prospective franchise owners should understand before investing in a franchise.

For Madison residents exploring restaurant, fitness, tutoring, cleaning or other franchise opportunities, buying into an established brand does not guarantee profitability. Prospective owners should review required financial disclosures, calculate startup and ongoing expenses, investigate franchisor claims and speak with current and former franchise owners before committing money. This is especially useful for local workers considering self-employment or a second career. [Read More]

Kim's Diner, Huntsville

Kim's Diner is a small, locally owned diner on North Memorial Parkway serving breakfast and lunch six days a week. The menu starts with familiar diner food, eggs, pancakes, omelets, sandwiches and burgers, but Kim also works in a few Korean flavors. The kimchi burger is one of the items that separates Kim's from the average breakfast-and-burger stop.

Kim herself is a big part of the restaurant. Customers regularly mention her by name and the place has the personal feel you get from an owner-run diner where the same person cooking your breakfast may also remember what you ordered last time.

Breakfast is a good place to start. Western omelets with potatoes, pancakes, French toast and breakfast sandwiches are among the dishes customers repeatedly mention. If you are coming closer to lunch, the club sandwich and burgers get plenty of attention too. The Big Brother Burger is one of the larger options while the kimchi burger adds a spicy Korean bite to an otherwise familiar diner favorite. And these burgers are huge.

Try Kim's for breakfast. Get an omelet or pancakes if you want the classic Kim's experience. If you are there for lunch, skip the plain burger and try the kimchi burger. And if you are there on specific days of the week, they got Bulgogi and Donkatsu... oh and she serves up Ramyen (Korean style ramen).

This is definitely a hidden gem! You just gotta go! Maybe tomorrow... because it's closed on Sunday.
