Madison city offices will close for Veterans Day on Nov. 11

The City of Madison confirms that municipal buildings and programs will be closed Wednesday, November 11, in observance of Veterans Day.

Residents who need to handle permits, municipal business, or in-person city services should plan around the closure. Household garbage and yard-debris collection are handled through separate service arrangements, so residents should check their specific collection information rather than assuming pickup changes.

Holiday travelers warned about hidden booking fees

The Federal Trade Commission issued a November 3 consumer alert warning that online travel booking services can add fees or preselected extras that are easy to overlook.

For Madison residents booking holiday flights, hotels, or rental arrangements, the practical advice is to scroll through the entire checkout page, remove unwanted extras, and compare the final total with the original quoted price. The FTC's recent enforcement example involves travel app booking practices, but the precautions apply to other online purchases as well. [Read More]

Alabama veterans and military families reminded of available state support

Governor Kay Ivey designated November 5–11 as Veterans Week in Alabama and highlighted the state's Department of Veterans Affairs and its support for veterans.

In Madison and the broader Huntsville military community, Veterans Week is a timely opportunity for eligible veterans and military families to review benefits and services they may not currently be using. It is also a useful reminder for families transitioning from military to civilian life to explore state assistance alongside federal VA programs. [Read More]

Ozu, Huntsville

Ozu is a new Japanese bar and restaurant in downtown Huntsville at 104 Jefferson Street South, in the former Phat Sammy's space. Owners Megan and Sydney are Huntsville natives who wanted to create the kind of sushi and date-night spot they found themselves looking for while traveling. Ozu officially opened November 5 and focuses on sushi, cocktails and omakase, which is a chef-selected dining experience.

Sushi is the center of the menu, but the omakase option is what gives Ozu a different angle. Instead of choosing every course yourself, you let the chef guide the meal based on what is available and what they want to serve. The bar is also a big part of the concept, with cocktails made using house-prepared syrups plus sake, wine and spirits.

Since the restaurant has only been open a few days, I would treat this as an early look rather than a final verdict on specific dishes. The strongest reason to go right now is to experience the concept itself, especially if you enjoy sushi, cocktails or want to try omakase without leaving Huntsville.

Ozu makes for an evening out than a quick sushi stop. The room is darker and more intimate, with a late-night schedule that runs until midnight during the week and 2:00 AM on weekends.

Monday to Friday, 4:00 PM to midnight

Saturday and Sunday, 4:00 PM to 2:00 AM

Did an Alien Abduct My Cat?

Last week, we lost our cat. Totally unprepared for that. And yes it was my fault, I probably allowed the cat the exit the airlock (garage) but didn't know for sue. And we couldn't find him for 5 days. I started believing that my cat was abducted by aliens or it metamorphasized into a moth.

I was told that indoor cats that escape usually stay within 5 houses away and it ended up being true for us. So in light of that, we got'm a special kind of collar.

💡 Answer to Trivia Question:

B) Madison Station... The town grew around the Memphis and Charleston Railroad beginning in the 1850s. When residents incorporated the town in 1869, they dropped the word "Station" and the name became simply Madison.
