Trivia Question❓What distinguishes BBQ in Alabama from the rest of the South? Answer at the bottom of the newsletter |
The Madison school board in Alabama is considering a policy to restrict students from using wireless devices on school campuses. The policy aims to minimize distractions and cyberbullying, as well as encourage face-to-face interactions among students. The proposed policy includes guidelines for phone use during instructional time, including locking the devices in lockers or bags. Additionally, the policy allows for special circumstances, such as medical reasons or instructional purposes, where students would be permitted to use their devices. The board will hold a second reading before the policy can be implemented. Read More... |

The Magic of Madison’s Lightning Bugs |
As summer evenings settle over Madison, you’ll spot one of the South’s most enchanting sights... lightning bugs, also called fireflies, flickering across yards and fields. But did you know these glowing insects are actually beetles and not flies at all?
Their glow is thanks to a chemical reaction in their lower abdomen called bioluminescence, which they use to attract mates and communicate. Each species has its own unique flash pattern, and if you look closely on warm, humid nights, you might see a twinkle “conversation” between bugs.
In Madison, these summer visitors are most active at dusk in moist, wooded areas or near creeks... like those found in Dublin Park or Indian Creek Greenway.
And here’s a fun Southern tradition: catching lightning bugs in mason jars (with holes in the lid!) is a nostalgic rite of passage for many kids in Alabama.
While their glow adds summer charm, fireflies are also indicators of a healthy ecosystem, so turn off bright outdoor lights and skip chemical sprays to help them thrive.
Have a favorite lightning bug memory or photo? We’d love to feature it in the next issue of the Madison Memo! |
